To say my dad had a huge impact on Capital’s success is an understatement. Words cannot express my gratitude for the wisdom he instilled in me. My dad kept close tabs on Capital from the start. We lost him four years ago, but no doubt he is still keeping an eye on us. It’s an honor to have my mom here today to share four lessons I learned from my dad. As a younger man, I did not understand what he meant at the time, but I definitely do today!
Lesson 1: If you don’t go to college; go into sales or start a business. I was not an A student; I barely passed Kindergarten. However, I was smart enough to listen to my dad and start a business. It required me to become a salesman. My initial goal was to make an extra $500 a month. Today Capital is a multi-million dollar business. We employ over 80 people and are privileged to work with over 4,000 agencies. Find your passion. Follow it. Work hard.
Lesson 2: The right people will show up at the right time. Luck, coincidence or divine intervention….the right people arrived at Capital at the right time; not limited to employees alone, but also encompassing agencies, service industries and beyond. Surround yourself with good people.
Lesson 3: You have to spend money to make money. Much of Capital’s success can be attributed to this lesson….with money returning from unexpected places and in unexpected ways. Possess a spirit of abundance. Be willing to spend money.
Lesson 4: It’s lonely at the top. I have had to make very difficult decisions…often times alone. I am thankful for encouragement and reassurances from earthly and heavenly fathers. Consider your sources of support and courage when there is no one but you.
I hope these lessons resonate in a helpful way for you, as they have had tremendous impact on me. Capital is a business allowing us to go home and take care of our families. As your partner, our intent is to add value to your agency through exceptional service, efficiency, and increased revenues. In turn, allowing you to go home and take care of your families!
